BRISTNALL HALL TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE

GOVERNOR PEN PORTRAITS

Dr Saleem Ahmad

I have been a Governor for the last 30 years and was appointed last year as Community Governor. I have a degree in Engineering as well as a Ph.D and worked for GKN with responsibility for Research and Development. My two sons were both at Bristnall Hall, they went on to University, and now one is a medical Consultant, the other an electrical & electronics engineer.
I enjoy walking, gardening and promoting charitable work. I am also passionate about education. I hope my academic and industrial experience will be beneficial for the welfare of both pupils and staff and for the continuous improvement of the College.

Carolyn Atkinson

I am a parent governor with a child currently in year 9. I have a degree in history from the University of Leeds and have worked for the last 19 years as an employment adviser in Sandwell.
I enjoy the cinema, the theatre, eating out and walking my retired racing greyhound (whilst trying to avoid the local cats!!)
I am one of the more recent additions to the Governing Body, having joined in May, and I hope to help the school build on its existing achievements. I have been a parent governor, then community governor, at Moat Farm Junior School for the last 5 years and hope the experience gained in these roles will enable me to make a valuable contribution to the Bristnall Hall Governing Body.

Sara Burroughs

I am an active member of Bristnall Hall Technology College. I am a Parent Council member, Parent Governor and Chair of Resources and Community committee. I work for Birmingham City Council and during the past 15 years my role has been in Corporate Human Resources Learning and Development.

I enjoy watching football, especially non-league levels, walking and reading.

I hope my experience, enthusiasm and commitment to helping people fulfil their potential adds a valuable contribution to Bristnall Hall.

Samantha Green

I was appointed as a Governor in May 2010, and am a member of the Resources and Community Committee.

I am a Team Manager for a recruitment company specializing in recruiting Education Personnel, both teaching and administrative into schools throughout the East and West Midlands. I manage the Secondary side of the business and due to the small boutique style of the agency am involved in all aspects of the business and report into the Director. I have a degree in Business Management obtained from Sheffield University. I do a lot of work on helping year 10 and 11 students in the schools I supply to with their CV skills and Interview Skills, something I can also develop with the students at Bristnall Hall.

I have a 4 year old daughter which keeps me busy in my spare time. I also enjoy travelling and go to the gym several times a week.

I think that being a younger governor means I see things from alternate perspectives and can offer a different set of values and ideas.

Lesley Hagger-Vaughan

I was appointed to the BHTC Governing Body in 2009 and am Chair of the Curriculum and Attainment Committee. I have worked in education for almost 30 years, as a teacher, as a Deputy Head in a neighbouring Sandwell Secondary School and most recently as E-Learning Adviser for Sandwell. I am currently on a secondment to the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency as a Senior Curriculum Adviser. I served as a parent governor at my children’s school in Birmingham for a number of years and am keen to bring my expertise and passion for education to Bristnall Hall.

Wendy Lewis

I am a parent of six children who have all been/are being educated at BHTC. I was appointed as a Parent Governor in the early part of 2010 and am a member of the Resources and Community Committee.

During the past 12 years I have worked in various child focused environments including Barnardos; also as a qualified counsellor working predominately with children, young people and families and at the moment working one to one in a local Primary School supporting children with Special Education Needs. In addition I worked voluntarily with young people at a church based youth club and with young male survivors of Domestic Abuse.

I enjoy walking, reading and spending time with my family and friends and hope to do my best to support BHTC students, staff and fellow governors in any way I can.

Mike Saunders

I was appointed to the BHTC Governing Body in March 2009 and am it’s  Vice Chairman.
I retired from full time work some years ago and am now part time Finance Director of a new and growing company involved in providing telecare services to local Authorities and Health authorities. We help them manage better the demands placed by clients/patients who have dementia. My hobby, apart from grandchildren (some of whom are in, or approaching, secondary education) and sport, is portrait sculpture – although less a hobby now as I am beginning to get commissions.

I was, many years ago, Chairman of the Governing Body of the school my children attended and so know a little of what the role entails although so much has changed since then. My last full time job, before retirement, was at Ofwat where I was Director of Competition and Consumer Affairs. Before that I was a Director with the Local Government Ombudsman. Both involved holding people/companies to account while at the same time offering constructive help and that is one of the roles of school governors. And being retired I have the time to help if needed.

Barry Thomas

I was appointed as a Parent Governor in the early part of 2010 and am a member of the Curriculum and Attainment Committee.
I have been employed at BIP LTD as a mechanical tehnician for 30 plus years.
My interests include football, snooker, golf but not averse to any sport.
I can only promise to do my best for Bristnall Hall Technology College (Pupils and Staff) in my time as a Governor.

Stephen Tilsley

I was appointed a member of the Governing Body in Spring 2009 and became Chair of Governors shortly afterwards. I was Chief Executive of Metsec plc, an engineering company in Oldbury employing 350 people and retired in 2008, having completed 30 years. I am currently Chairman of EAL, an awarding body for Engineering vocational qualifications.

I am married and have three grown up children. I enjoy tennis, hiking, yoga and golf as well as the cinema and theatre.

During my career at Metsec I have been passionate about developing a world class workforce through training; this included expanding our Apprentice scheme. I hope my business experience will help the College on its journey of continuous improvement.
